West Columbia is a city located in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. It is located on the west bank of the Brazos River, approximately 50 miles southwest of Houston. The population was 3,905 at the 2010 census.

History

West Columbia was founded in 1826 by Stephen F. Austin and named after Columbia, the capital of Texas. The city was originally a trading post for the local Native American tribes. In 1836, the town was incorporated and became the county seat of Brazoria County.
In the late 19th century, West Columbia was a major port for the cotton industry. The city was also home to several large plantations, including the historic Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site.
In the early 20th century, West Columbia was a major center for the oil industry. The city was home to several oil refineries and was the site of the first offshore oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.

West Columbia is located at 29°7′25″N 95°37′17″W (29.123611, -95.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,845 people, 1,521 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 919.2 people per square mile (354.7/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 412.3 per square mile (159.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 74.45% White, 17.45% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.90% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.90% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 13.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
