Van Summary

Van is a city located in Van Zandt County, Texas, United States. It is situated in the eastern part of the state, about 50 miles east of Dallas. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census, up from 2,072 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Van is located at 32°32'45" North, 95°45'45" West (32.5457, -95.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Van was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Tennessee. The town was named after Isaac Van Zandt, a prominent politician in the Republic of Texas. The town was incorporated in 1876 and has been the county seat of Van Zandt County since 1848.

Van is a small rural community with a diverse economy. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant, a furniture factory, and a metal fabrication plant. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,072 people, 790 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 945.2 people per square mile (364.7/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 405.2 per square mile (156.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.45% White, 14.90% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.17% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,845. About 11.7% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 14.3% of those age 65 or over.
