Tatum Summary

Tatum, Texas is a small town located in Rusk County, Texas. It is situated about 25 miles east of Longview and about 20 miles west of Henderson. The population of Tatum was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Tatum was founded in 1881 by the Tatum family, who had moved to the area from Alabama. The town was named after the family’s patriarch, William Tatum. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for the timber industry. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Tatum was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had several stores, a bank, a hotel, a cotton gin, and a sawmill. The town also had a school, a post office, and a newspaper.
In the 1920s, the timber industry began to decline and the population of Tatum began to decline as well. The Great Depression further exacerbated the decline of the town. By the 1940s, the population had dropped to just over 500.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The timber industry was revived and the population began to grow again. The town also began to attract new businesses, including a feed store, a grocery store, and a hardware store.

Geography

Tatum is located in the eastern part of Rusk County, Texas. It is situated about 25 miles east of Longview and about 20 miles west of Henderson. The town is located at the intersection of State Highway 43 and Farm to Market Road 17.
The terrain around Tatum is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The town is located in the Piney Woods region of East Texas. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.

Economy

The economy of Tatum is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several farms, which produce cotton, corn, soybeans, and other crops. The timber industry is also an important part of the local economy.
