History

The area that is now Princeton was first settled in the 1840s by settlers from the Peters Colony. The first settlers were mostly from the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The town was originally known as Verona, but was later renamed Princeton in 1846 after the town of Princeton, New Jersey.
In 1848, the first post office was established in Princeton. The town was incorporated in 1873 and the first mayor was elected in 1874.
In the late 19th century, Princeton was a thriving agricultural community. The town was known for its cotton production and was home to several cotton gins.
In the early 20th century, the town began to grow and develop. The population increased from 1,000 in 1900 to 2,000 in 1920. The town was also home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, and a movie theater.

Princeton is located at 33°10'25" North, 96°33'45" West (33.173611, -96.562500). The city is situated in the northeast corner of Collin County, Texas, and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.
The city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The city is located in the Blackland Prairie region of Texas and is part of the Central Great Plains ecoregion.
