Poynor is a small unincorporated community located in Henderson County, Texas. It is situated about 10 miles south of Athens and about 20 miles east of Tyler. The population of Poynor was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020.

History

Poynor was founded in 1873 by William Poynor, a former Confederate soldier. He named the town after himself and it was incorporated in 1876. The town was originally a farming community and the main crops grown were cotton, corn, and wheat. In the early 1900s, the town began to grow and several businesses were established, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a cotton gin.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression hit the area. Many of the businesses closed and the population decreased. However, the town was able to survive and in the 1940s, the population began to increase again.

Poynor is located in Henderson County, Texas. It is situated about 10 miles south of Athens and about 20 miles east of Tyler. The town is located in the Piney Woods region of East Texas and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The climate in the area is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.
