Oglesby Summary
Oglesby is a small town located in Coryell County, Texas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Oglesby was founded in 1881 by William Oglesby, a former Confederate soldier. The town was originally called Oglesby Station, and was a stop on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Oglesby is located at 31°25'25" North, 97°37'45" West (31.423607, -97.629093). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Oglesby is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a few small businesses. The town is also home to a few manufacturing plants, including a plant that produces plastic products.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 790.2 people per square mile (304.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 331.3 per square mile (127.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.45% White, 11.20% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 5.45% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.09% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,845.
