Oakwood Summary

Oakwood is a small town located in Leon County, Texas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centerville Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Oakwood was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Centerville. The town was named after the abundance of oak trees in the area. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Oakwood was a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The town had a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, a general store, a hotel, a bank, and several churches.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the population moved away to larger cities. By the 1940s, the population had dropped to less than 200 people.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence as new businesses opened and the population began to grow again. Today, Oakwood is a small but vibrant community with a population of around 500 people.

Oakwood is located at 31°25'25" North, 96°17'45" West (31.423, -96.296). The town is situated in the rolling hills of East Texas, about 25 miles east of Centerville.
The town is located in the Piney Woods region of Texas, which is characterized by dense forests of pine and oak trees. The area is known for its mild climate and abundant wildlife.

The nearest major cities are Dallas 90 miles to the west and Houston 150 miles to the south
