Naples Summary

Naples is a small town located in Morris County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Sulphur River, approximately 20 miles east of the city of Texarkana. The population of Naples was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Naples was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Naples, Italy. The settlers named the area after their hometown and established a small farming community. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, the town began to grow and prosper. The economy was largely based on agriculture, with cotton and corn being the main crops. The town also had a sawmill and a gristmill.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression hit the area. Many of the town’s residents moved away in search of work. The population of Naples dropped to just over 500 by the 1940s.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The economy was bolstered by the construction of a new bridge over the Sulphur River, which allowed for easier access to the nearby cities of Texarkana and Shreveport. The town also benefited from the construction of a new school and the opening of a new post office.
