Montgomery Summary

Montgomery, Texas is a small city located in Montgomery County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 40 miles north of Houston and is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1837 and is the county seat of Montgomery County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 537.

History

Montgomery was founded in 1837 by John Wyatt Moody, a settler from Alabama. Moody named the town after his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama. The town was incorporated in 1848 and was the county seat of Montgomery County.
In the late 19th century, Montgomery was a thriving agricultural center, with cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes being the main crops. The town also had a sawmill, gristmill, and a cotton gin.
In the early 20th century, Montgomery began to experience a population boom as the Houston and Great Northern Railroad was built through the town. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the city.

Geography

Montgomery is located in southeastern Montgomery County at 30°17'25" North, 95°45'25" West (30.290, -95.757). It is situated about 40 miles north of Houston and is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Montgomery is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several farms and ranches, which produce cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes. The city also has a sawmill, gristmill, and a cotton gin.
Tourism is also an important part of the economy. The city is home to several historic sites, including the Montgomery County Courthouse, the Montgomery County Jail, and the Montgomery County Museum. The city also hosts several festivals and events throughout the year, including the Montgomery County Fair and the Montgomery County Rodeo.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 537 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the city. The population density was 762.3 people per square mile (294.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 327.3 per square mile (126.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females.
