Lorena is a small town located in McLennan County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 10 miles south of Waco and is part of the Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Lorena was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Lorena is located at 31°25'25" North, 97°14'17" West (31.423, -97.238). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
History
Lorena was founded in 1881 by the Houston and Texas Central Railway. The town was named after the daughter of a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1882. Lorena was incorporated in 1884.
Economy
The economy of Lorena is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several manufacturing plants, including a plant that produces plastic products. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 572.3 per square mile (221.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.45% White, 11.90% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 5.45% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.90% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
