Lipan Summary

Lipan is a small town located in Hood County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the Brazos River, about 25 miles southwest of Granbury. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

The area around Lipan was first settled in the late 1840s by settlers from the nearby town of Weatherford. The town was originally known as "Lipan Flats" and was named after the Lipan Apache Indians who lived in the area. The town was officially established in 1876 and was incorporated in 1884.
In the early 1900s, Lipan was a thriving agricultural community, with cotton, corn, and wheat being the main crops. The town also had a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression hit the area. Many of the businesses closed and the population began to dwindle. The town was further affected by the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, which caused many of the farmers to leave the area in search of work.
