History

The area that is now Leonard was first settled in the 1840s by a group of settlers from Tennessee. The town was originally known as "Tennessee Colony" and was later renamed "Leonard" in honor of Leonard Waller, a prominent local landowner. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Leonard was a thriving agricultural community, with cotton, corn, and wheat being the main crops. The town also had a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression hit the area. Many of the businesses closed and the population began to dwindle. However, the town was able to survive and by the 1950s, it had begun to experience a resurgence.

Leonard is located at 33°41'25" North, 96°17'45" West (33.690278, -96.295833). It is situated in the northeast corner of Fannin County, about 75 miles northeast of Dallas. The town is located on the banks of the Bois d'Arc Creek.
