Huntington, Texas is a small town located in Angelina County, Texas. It is situated on the banks of the Angelina River, about 25 miles east of Lufkin. The town was founded in 1872 and was named after Collis P. Huntington, a railroad magnate. The population of Huntington was 2,130 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Huntington is located at 31°14'25" North, 94°41'25" West (31.240278, -94.690278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Huntington’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several large timber companies, including Weyerhaeuser, International Paper, and Georgia-Pacific. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,130 people, 817 households, and 571 families residing in the town. The population density was 962.2 people per square mile (371.7/km2). There were 917 housing units at an average density of 414.3 per square mile (159.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.45% White, 17.90% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.02% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
