Hooks is a city located in Bowie County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Texarkana, Texas–Texarkana, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,936 at the 2010 census.
History
Hooks was founded in 1873 by the Hooks family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was named after the family, and the post office was established in 1876. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Hooks is located at 33°27'25" North, 94°20'45" West (33.456944, -94.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Hooks is a small rural community with a population of 1,936 as of the 2010 census. The economy of Hooks is largely based on agriculture and the timber industry. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 607.2 per square mile (234.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 17.90% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.20% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
