Eagle Lake Summary

Eagle Lake is a city located in Colorado County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,255 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Weimar Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area around Eagle Lake was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The town was founded in 1873 and named after nearby Eagle Lake. The lake was named for the large number of bald eagles that lived in the area. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Eagle Lake was a thriving agricultural center. The town was home to several cotton gins, a cottonseed oil mill, and a large number of businesses. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to other towns in the area.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the local economy shifted away from agriculture. The railroad station closed in the 1960s, and many of the businesses in town closed as well.

Geography

Eagle Lake is located at 29°45'25" North, 96°17'45" West (29.756944, -96.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Eagle Lake's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several cotton gins, a cottonseed oil mill, and a number of other agricultural businesses. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,255 people, 845 households, and 590 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,019.2 people per square mile (393.3/km2). There were 945 housing units at an average density of 425.2 per square mile (164.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.45% White, 21.45% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.45% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.45% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 16.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
