Dorchester is a small unincorporated community located in the southeastern corner of Texas, in the county of Jefferson. History
The area that is now Dorchester was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of French settlers. The settlement was originally known as “La Pointe” and was located on the banks of the Neches River. The settlement was later renamed “Dorchester” after the town of Dorchester in England.
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was formed and the area that is now Dorchester became part of the newly formed state. The town was officially incorporated in 1837 and was named after the English town of Dorchester.
In the late 1800s, Dorchester was a thriving port town. It was a major shipping point for cotton, lumber, and other goods. The town also had a thriving fishing industry.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the shipping industry moved away from the area. The population of Dorchester began to decline as well.
