Dodd City Summary

Dodd City is a small town located in Fannin County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 10 miles east of Bonham and about 20 miles south of the Oklahoma border. The population of Dodd City was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Dodd City was founded in 1887 by William and Mary Dodd, who moved to the area from Tennessee. The town was originally called Doddsville, but the name was changed to Dodd City in 1891. The town was incorporated in 1892 and the first post office was established in 1893.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 1900s it had become a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop grown in the area, and the town had several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The town also had a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, and several stores.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the cotton industry declined. The Great Depression further weakened the town's economy, and by the 1940s the population had dropped to just over 200.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence as the oil and gas industry began to develop in the area. The town's population increased to over 500 by the 1960s, and it has remained relatively stable since then.

Geography

Dodd City is located at 33°41'25" North, 96°10'25" West (33.690278, -96.173611). The town is situated on the western edge of Fannin County, about 10 miles east of Bonham and about 20 miles south of the Oklahoma border.
The town is located in a rural area, with rolling hills and open fields. The terrain is mostly flat, with some areas of higher elevation. The climate is generally mild, with hot summers and cold winters.

Economy

The economy of Dodd City is largely based on agriculture and oil and gas production. Cotton is still grown in the area, and there are several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill in the town.
