Desoto Summary

DeSoto, Texas is a city located in Dallas County, Texas, United States. It is a suburb of Dallas and part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The population was 49,047 at the 2010 census.

History

DeSoto was founded in 1847 by a group of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The town was named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. The town was originally a farming community, but it began to grow rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s as the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex expanded.

Geography

DeSoto is located at 32°35'25" North, 96°51'17" West (32.590278, -96.854722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.2 square miles (57.5 km2), of which 22.1 square miles (57.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

DeSoto is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including Walmart, Lowe's, and Home Depot.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 49,047 people, 16,845 households, and 12,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,213.3 people per square mile (854.7/km2). There were 18,711 housing units at an average density of 845.2 per square mile (326.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 28.3% African American, 0.6% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.3% of the population.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,902, and the median income for a family was $51,822. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $30,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 8.7% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
