Dawson is a small town located in Navarro County, Texas, United States. It is situated about halfway between Corsicana and Hillsboro, and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Dawson was founded in 1881 by the Dawson family, who had moved to the area from Tennessee. The town was named after the family patriarch, William Dawson. The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s, the discovery of oil in the area led to an economic boom. The town quickly grew, and by the 1920s, it had become a thriving center of commerce.
In the 1950s, Dawson began to decline as the oil industry moved away from the area. The town's population dropped from a peak of 1,500 in the 1940s to just over 1,000 by the 2000s.

Geography

Dawson is located at 32°14'25" North, 96°37'45" West (32.240278, -96.629167). It is situated in the eastern part of Navarro County, about halfway between Corsicana and Hillsboro. The town is located on the western edge of the Blackland Prairie, an area of rolling hills and fertile soil.
The town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the surrounding area.

Dawson's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including cotton, corn, and hay. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile. There were 486 housing units at an average density of 405.8 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
