Como Summary

Como is a small town located in Hopkins County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 10 miles (16 km) east of Sulphur Springs and about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Dallas. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Como was founded in 1873 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after Como, Kentucky, the hometown of one of the settlers. The town was incorporated in 1876 and a post office was established in 1877.
In the early 1900s, Como was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop, but corn, wheat, and oats were also grown. The town had several stores, a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a cotton gin.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the population moved away to larger cities. By the 1940s, the population had dropped to less than 200.

Geography

Como is located at 33°10′25″N 95°45′17″W (33.173611, -95.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Como’s economy is largely based on agriculture. Cotton is still the main crop, but corn, wheat, and oats are also grown. The town also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 790.2 people per square mile (305.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 337.2 per square mile (130.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.17% White, 5.45% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,945. About 14.3% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
