Coahoma Summary

Coahoma is a small town located in Howard County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the northern edge of the Texas Panhandle, approximately 20 miles south of Big Spring. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

History

Coahoma was founded in 1891 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after the Coahuiltecan Indians, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The first post office was established in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Coahoma was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop, and the town had several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The town also had a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, and several stores.
In the 1920s, the oil industry began to boom in the area, and Coahoma became a center for oil production. The town had several oil wells, and the population grew rapidly.
In the 1950s, the oil industry began to decline, and the population of Coahoma began to decline as well. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression, and many of the businesses closed.
In the 1970s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The oil industry was once again booming, and the population began to grow. The town also began to attract new businesses, such as a feed store, a grocery store, and a hardware store.

Coahoma is located at 32°45'25" North, 101°17'45" West (32.756944, -101.295833). The town is situated on the northern edge of the Texas Panhandle, approximately 20 miles south of Big Spring.

Economy

The economy of Coahoma is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The town has several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The oil industry is also a major contributor to the local economy.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,092 people, 431 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile. There were 488 housing units at an average density of 407.5 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the town was 81.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 15.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
