Coahoma was founded in 1891 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after the Coahuiltecan Indians, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The first post office was established in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Coahoma was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop, and the town had several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The town also had a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, and several stores.

There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
