Clarksville Summary

Clarksville is a small town located in Red River County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Red River, approximately 100 miles northeast of Dallas. The population of Clarksville was 2,092 at the 2010 census.

History

Clarksville was founded in 1833 by William Clark, a veteran of the War of 1812. The town was named after him and was the first county seat of Red River County. The town was incorporated in 1837 and was the first town in the county to have a post office.
In the late 19th century, Clarksville was a thriving river port and a major cotton-producing center. The town was also home to several large cotton plantations.
In the early 20th century, Clarksville experienced a period of decline due to the boll weevil infestation and the Great Depression. The town was revitalized in the 1950s with the construction of a new bridge over the Red River.
