Chireno Summary

Chireno is a small town located in Nacogdoches County, Texas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nacogdoches, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Chireno was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Louisiana. The town was named after a local creek, which was named after a Choctaw Indian chief. The town was incorporated in 1883 and was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to a cotton gin, a grist mill, and a sawmill.

Geography

Chireno is located at 31°25'25" North, 94°45'45" West (31.423, -94.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Chireno is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a few small businesses. The town is also home to a few churches and a post office.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 790.2 people per square mile (305.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 331.3 per square mile (127.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.63% White, 17.78% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.17.
