Celeste was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Celeste, Tennessee. The town was named after the Tennessee town, which was named after the daughter of a local Indian chief. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Celeste was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop, and the town had several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The town also had a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and several stores.
In the 1920s, Celeste began to decline as the cotton industry declined. The Great Depression further weakened the town's economy. In the 1940s, Celeste began to experience a resurgence as the oil industry began to boom in the area. The town was incorporated in 1949.
