West Columbia Summary
West Columbia is a city located in Lexington County, South Carolina, United States. It is situated along the Congaree River, just across the river from the state capital of Columbia. The population was 14,988 at the 2010 census.
History
West Columbia was founded in 1894 as Brookland, and was renamed in 1936. The city was incorporated in the same year. The city was originally a farming community, but it has since become a bedroom community for Columbia.
Geography
West Columbia is located at 33°59'25" North, 81°3'25" West (33.990278, -81.056944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
West Columbia is home to several businesses, including a number of manufacturing and industrial companies. The city is also home to the South Carolina State Fairgrounds, which hosts the annual South Carolina State Fair.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 14,988 people, 6,541 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,945.3 people per square mile (1,137.2/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 1,395.2 per square mile (538.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 6,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
