Summerton Summary

Summerton is a small town located in Clarendon County, South Carolina. It is situated on the banks of Lake Marion, a large lake that is part of the Santee Cooper Lakes system. The town is located approximately 40 miles east of Columbia, the state capital. Summerton has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the larger Sumter Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Summerton was founded in 1891 by the Summerton Land and Improvement Company. The town was named after the company’s president, William Summer. The town was originally intended to be a resort community, but it quickly developed into a small farming community. The town was incorporated in 1895 and has remained relatively unchanged since then.

Geography

Summerton is located in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. The town is situated on the banks of Lake Marion, a large lake that is part of the Santee Cooper Lakes system. The town is located approximately 40 miles east of Columbia, the state capital. The town is surrounded by rural farmland and is located near the towns of Manning and Santee.
