Sharon Summary

Sharon, South Carolina is a small town located in York County, South Carolina. It is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 25 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. The town was founded in 1845 and is named after the nearby Sharon Presbyterian Church. The population of Sharon was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Sharon is located at 34°59'25"N 81°20'45"W (34.990278, -81.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The town is located in the Piedmont region of South Carolina, which is characterized by rolling hills and valleys. The terrain is generally flat, with some hills in the surrounding area. The town is located in the Catawba River watershed.

Economy

Sharon is a small town with a limited economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a textile mill and a furniture factory.
The town is also home to Sharon Elementary School, which serves students in grades K-5. The school is part of the York County School District.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 677.5 per square mile (262.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
