Prosperity is a small town located in Newberry County, South Carolina. It is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 25 miles northwest of Columbia, the state capital. Prosperity is located at 34°17'25"N 81°37'17"W (34.290278, -81.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Prosperity is a small rural town with a limited economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a textile mill and a furniture factory.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,182 people, 463 households, and 315 families residing in the town. The population density was 983.3 people per square mile (380.2/km2). There were 517 housing units at an average density of 429.2 per square mile (165.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 463 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
