Ninety Six is a town located in Greenwood County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,099 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenwood, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The town of Ninety Six was founded in 1730 by English settlers. The town was named for its location, which was 96 miles from the Cherokee village of Keowee. The town was the site of the first land battle of the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Ninety Six, which took place in 1775. The town was also the site of a major battle during the American Civil War, the Battle of Star Fort.

Geography

Ninety Six is located at 34°14'25" North, 82°7'25" West (34.240278, -82.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Ninety Six is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several manufacturing plants, including a paper mill, a textile mill, and a furniture factory. The town also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,099 people, 845 households, and 571 families residing in the town. The population density was 945.2 people per square mile (364.3/km2). There were 945 housing units at an average density of 425.2 per square mile (164.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 18.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
