Moncks Corner Summary
Moncks Corner is a town located in Berkeley County, South Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Berkeley County and is located approximately 25 miles north of Charleston. The population of Moncks Corner was 7,885 at the 2010 census.
History
Moncks Corner was founded in 1728 by Thomas Monck, a planter from Barbados. Monck purchased a large tract of land in the area and established a plantation. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1885.
Moncks Corner was an important trading center in the 19th century. It was the site of a major battle during the American Civil War in 1865. The town was also the site of a major railroad junction in the late 19th century.
Geography
Moncks Corner is located at 33°14'N 80°14'W (33.23, -80.23). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Moncks Corner is home to several major employers, including Santee Cooper, a state-owned electric and water utility; Berkeley Electric Cooperative, a member-owned electric cooperative; and Santee Cooper Nuclear Station, a nuclear power plant. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a plastics plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,837 people, 2,619 households, and 1,845 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,637.2 people per square mile (630.2/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 677.2 per square mile (261.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.45% White, 28.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 2,619 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,921, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 10.2% of families and 12.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
