Manning Summary

Manning is a city located in Clarendon County, South Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Clarendon County. The population was 4,108 at the 2010 census.

History

Manning was founded in 1855 and named after John Laurence Manning, the Governor of South Carolina from 1852 to 1854. The town was incorporated in 1872.
During the Civil War, Manning was the site of a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces on April 17, 1865. The skirmish was part of the Union's campaign to capture Charleston.

Geography

Manning is located at 33°41'25" North, 80°14'45" West (33.690278, -80.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Manning is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a furniture factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,108 people, 1,619 households, and 1,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 976.2 people per square mile (377.3/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 441.7 per square mile (170.3/km2).
