Elloree, South Carolina is a small town located in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. It is situated along the banks of the North Fork of the Edisto River, approximately 25 miles southeast of Columbia, the state capital. The town was founded in 1883 and named after the daughter of the first postmaster, Elloree. The population of Elloree was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.
Geography
Elloree is located at 33°25'25" North, 80°41'45" West (33.423, -80.695). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Elloree is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including the Elloree Farms, which produces cotton, soybeans, and corn. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.7 per square mile (263.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.2% White, 40.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
