Cottageville Summary

Cottageville is a small town located in Colleton County, South Carolina. It is situated on the banks of the Edisto River, approximately 20 miles northwest of Charleston. The town has a population of 1,717 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

Cottageville was founded in 1820 by a group of settlers from Virginia. The town was named after the Cottage family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops were cotton, corn, and tobacco. In the late 19th century, the town began to grow and develop, and by the early 20th century, it had become a thriving community.
In the early 1900s, the town was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a cotton gin, and a general store. The town also had a post office, a bank, and a hotel. In the 1920s, the town was connected to the rest of the state by a railroad line.
