Pickens County Summary

Pickens County is located in the northwestern corner of South Carolina, and is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. It is bordered by Greenville County to the east, Anderson County to the south, Oconee County to the west, and the state of North Carolina to the north. The county seat is Pickens, and the largest city is Easley.

History

Pickens County was formed in 1826 from parts of Anderson and Pendleton counties. It was named for Andrew Pickens, a Revolutionary War hero and U.S. Congressman from South Carolina. The county was originally part of the Cherokee Nation, and the area was home to several Cherokee villages. The county was also home to several Revolutionary War battles, including the Battle of Cowpens in 1781.

Geography

Pickens County covers an area of 545 square miles, and is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The county is mostly rural, with the majority of the land being used for farming and forestry. The county is home to several lakes, including Lake Keowee, Lake Jocassee, and Lake Hartwell. The highest point in the county is Sassafras Mountain, which has an elevation of 3,553 feet.
