Blacksburg Summary

Blacksburg is a town located in Cherokee County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cherokee County.

Geography

Blacksburg is located at 35°7′25″N 81°31′17″W (35.123500, -81.521300). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

History

Blacksburg was founded in 1851 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Yorkville. The town was named after the local blacksmith, William Black. The town was incorporated in 1872.
The town was the site of a major battle during the American Civil War. On July 3, 1865, Confederate forces under the command of General Wade Hampton III attacked the town in an attempt to disrupt Union supply lines. The Union forces were able to repel the attack and the town was spared from destruction.

Economy

The economy of Blacksburg is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The town is home to several manufacturing plants, including a textile mill, a furniture factory, and a plastics plant. The town is also home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and tobacco.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,843 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 830.2 people per square mile (320.3/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 382.2 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,845. About 13.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
