Batesburg-Leesville is a town located in Lexington County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Batesburg-Leesville was founded in 1892 when the towns of Batesburg and Leesville merged. The town was named after two prominent families in the area, the Bates and the Lees. The town was originally a farming community, but it has since become a bedroom community for Columbia, South Carolina.

Economy

The economy of Batesburg-Leesville is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The town is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,092 people, 1,945 households, and 1,346 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,213.2 people per square mile (468.9/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 498.2 per square mile (192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.45% White, 29.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.
