Rifton Summary

Rifton is a small hamlet located in Ulster County, New York, United States. It is situated in the Town of Esopus, approximately 8 miles (13 km) south of the City of Kingston. The hamlet is located on the west bank of the Rondout Creek, which is a tributary of the Hudson River. The population of Rifton was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Rifton was first settled in the late 1700s by Dutch and German immigrants. The hamlet was originally known as “Rifton’s Landing” due to its location on the Rondout Creek, which was used as a transportation route for goods and people. The hamlet was officially incorporated in 1845 and was named after the Rifton family, who were prominent landowners in the area.

In the late 1800s, Rifton was a thriving industrial center, with several factories and mills located along the Rondout Creek. The hamlet was also home to a number of quarries, which provided stone for many of the buildings in the area.

Rifton is located at 41°45'25" North, 74°02'45" West (41.756944, -74.045278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Rifton’s economy is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The hamlet is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and galleries. The hamlet is also home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of fruits and vegetables.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in Rifton. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). The racial makeup of the hamlet was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.

There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the hamlet, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
