Goshen Summary

Goshen is a town located in Orange County, New York, United States. It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown metropolitan area. The population was 5,454 at the 2010 census.

History

Goshen was first settled in 1714 by Dutch and English settlers. The town was originally part of the Town of Hamptonburgh, but was incorporated as its own town in 1789. The town was named after the biblical Land of Goshen.

Geography

Goshen is located in the southeastern part of Orange County, New York. It is bordered by the towns of Hamptonburgh to the north, Chester to the east, Blooming Grove to the south, and Warwick to the west.
The town is located in the Hudson Valley, and is approximately 50 miles north of New York City. The terrain is mostly hilly, with some flat areas in the northern part of the town. The highest point in the town is the summit of Schunemunk Mountain, at 1,664 feet (507 m) above sea level.

Economy

Goshen is home to several businesses, including a number of small manufacturing companies. The town is also home to the Orange County Fairgrounds, which hosts the annual Orange County Fair.
The town is also home to several farms, including the historic Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 5,454 people, 2,072 households, and 1,395 families residing in the town. The population density was 517.3 people per square mile (199.7/km2). There were 2,232 housing units at an average density of 211.3 per square mile (81.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
