West Alton is a small village located in St. Charles County, Missouri, United States. It is situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, just north of the city of Alton, Illinois. The village has a population of approximately 500 people and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

West Alton was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Alton, Illinois. The village was originally known as "West Alton Landing" and was a popular stop for steamboats traveling up and down the Mississippi River. The village was incorporated in 1876 and was officially renamed West Alton in 1883.
In the late 19th century, West Alton was a thriving river port and a popular destination for tourists. The village was home to several hotels, restaurants, and other businesses. However, the village's fortunes began to decline in the early 20th century as the river traffic decreased and the Great Depression hit the area.

Geography

West Alton is located at 38°51'25"N 90°25'45"W (38.856944, -90.429167). The village is situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, just north of the city of Alton, Illinois. The village is bordered by the Missouri River to the east and the Mississippi River to the west.
The village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of which is land. The village is located in a rural area and is surrounded by farmland and wooded areas.

Economy

West Alton's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants. The village also has a marina and a boat launch, which attract tourists and recreational boaters.
