Washington Summary

Washington, Missouri is a city located in Franklin County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 13,982 at the 2010 census.

History

Washington was founded in 1839 by German immigrants who named the city after George Washington. The city was incorporated in 1854. During the Civil War, Washington was the site of a major battle in the Battle of Washington. The city was also the site of a major battle in the Battle of Pilot Knob.

Geography

Washington is located at 38°33'25" North, 91°2'25" West (38.556944, -91.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Washington is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several large employers, including Washington University, Washington Regional Medical Center, and Washington School District.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 13,982 people, 5,717 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,717.3 people per square mile (662.2/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 751.2 per square mile (290.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 5,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
