Valley Park Summary

Valley Park is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

Valley Park was founded in 1857 by a group of German immigrants. The city was named after the nearby Meramec River Valley. The city was originally a farming community, but it soon became a popular destination for tourists due to its proximity to the Meramec River. In the late 19th century, the city was home to a number of resorts and hotels, as well as a popular amusement park.
In the early 20th century, the city began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to St. Louis. The city was incorporated in 1945 and has since become a popular suburb of St. Louis.

Geography

Valley Park is located at 38°31′17″N 90°30′17″W (38.521445, -90.504720). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), all land.

Economy

Valley Park is home to a number of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the St. Louis-based company, Emerson Electric.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,902 people, 2,717 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,637.2 people per square mile (630.2/km2). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 695.7 per square mile (268.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 6.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,902, and the median income for a family was $60,902. Males had a median income of $41,902 versus $30,902 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,902. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
