Geography
Hillsboro is located at 38°14'25" North, 90°37'17" West (38.240278, -90.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
History
Hillsboro was founded in 1819 by William Hill, a settler from Kentucky. The town was originally known as Hill's Town, but the name was changed to Hillsboro in 1837. The town was incorporated in 1867.
Hillsboro was a major stop on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, which ran through the city from 1881 to 1971. The railroad was a major employer in the city, and the town was home to several large factories, including a shoe factory, a flour mill, and a brickyard.

There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
