Hazelwood Summary

Hazelwood is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 25,703 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northern part of the county, and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

Hazelwood was founded in 1837 by William B. Hazelwood, a farmer from Tennessee. The city was originally known as Hazelwood Station, and was a stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1949, and has since grown to become one of the largest cities in St. Louis County.

Geography

Hazelwood is located at 38°45'25" North, 90°22'45" West (38.756944, -90.379167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hazelwood is home to several large employers, including Boeing, Express Scripts, and Emerson Electric. The city also has a number of smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 25,703 people, 10,845 households, and 6,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,193.2/km2). There were 11,845 housing units at an average density of 1,427.3 per square mile (552.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
