Grain Valley Summary

Grain Valley is a city located in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The population was 11,843 at the 2010 census.

History

Grain Valley was founded in 1868 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named for the abundance of grain that grew in the area. The first post office was established in 1871.
Grain Valley was incorporated as a city in 1945. The city has grown steadily since then, with the population increasing from 1,000 in 1980 to 11,843 in 2010.

Economy

Grain Valley is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including a large distribution center for FedEx.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,843 people, 4,541 households, and 3,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,427.2 people per square mile (550.7/km2). There were 4,845 housing units at an average density of 583.2 per square mile (225.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females.
