De Soto Summary

De Soto is a city located in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Big River, approximately 30 miles south of St. Louis. The population was 6,400 at the 2010 census.

History

De Soto was founded in 1857 by a group of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The town was named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who explored the area in the 16th century. The town was incorporated in 1876 and has since grown to become a thriving community.
The city was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1862, when Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant defeated Confederate forces under General Sterling Price. The battle was known as the Battle of Pilot Knob.

Geography

De Soto is located at 38°10'25" North, 90°37'17" West (38.173611, -90.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

De Soto is a small city with a diverse economy. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several stores and restaurants located in the downtown area.

There were 2,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
