Bolivar Summary

Bolivar, Missouri is a city located in Polk County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. Bolivar is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Bolivar was founded in 1835 by William H. Cannefax, a settler from Tennessee. The town was named after Simón Bolívar, a Venezuelan military and political leader who led the struggle for independence in much of South America. The town was incorporated in 1855.

Geography

Bolivar is located at 37°37'25" North, 93°20'17" West (37.623607, -93.338133). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Bolivar is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to Southwest Baptist University, a private, four-year university.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,845 people, 3,541 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.5 people per square mile (661.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 763.5 per square mile (295.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 15.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $21,818 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 11.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
