Sparta Summary

Sparta, Kentucky is a small town located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the southeastern part of the state. It is situated in the heart of the Cumberland Plateau, a region known for its rugged terrain and abundant natural resources. The town is located in the county of Pulaski, and is part of the larger Lake Cumberland region.

History

Sparta was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “Sparta Station” and was a stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1883 and was named after the ancient Greek city-state of Sparta.
In the late 1800s, Sparta was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the railroad industry declined and the population began to move away. The town was nearly abandoned by the 1950s, but in the late 1960s, the town began to experience a resurgence as people began to move back to the area.
