South Shore Summary

South Shore is a small city located in Greenup County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 40 miles east of Huntington, West Virginia. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

South Shore was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Russell. The town was originally known as "South Russell" and was later changed to South Shore. The town was incorporated in 1872.
The town was a major port for the Ohio River during the 19th century. It was a major stop for steamboats and barges carrying goods and passengers up and down the river. The town was also a major center for the coal industry, with several coal mines located in the area.

Geography

South Shore is located at 38°25'25" North, 82°51'45" West (38.423, -82.862). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of South Shore is largely based on the coal industry. The town is home to several coal mines, as well as a number of coal-related businesses. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 708.3 per square mile (273.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
