Toomsboro Summary

Toomsboro is a small town located in Wilkinson County, Georgia, United States. It is situated about halfway between Macon and Dublin, and is part of the Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Toomsboro was estimated to be 545 in 2019.

History

Toomsboro was founded in 1820 by William Toombs, a prominent lawyer and politician from Georgia. He named the town after himself, and it was incorporated in 1825. Toombs was a major figure in the state's politics during the antebellum period, and served as a U.S. Senator from 1853 to 1860.
The town was a major center of cotton production during the 19th century, and the local economy was largely based on agriculture. The town was also home to several churches, a school, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, Toomsboro began to decline as the local economy shifted away from agriculture. The town's population decreased steadily throughout the 20th century, and by the 2000 census, it had fallen to just 545 people.

Geography

Toomsboro is located in central Georgia, about halfway between Macon and Dublin. It is situated at the intersection of Georgia State Route 57 and Georgia State Route 96. The town is located in the Piedmont region of the state, and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests.
