Oglethorpe Summary

Oglethorpe, Georgia is a small city located in Macon County, in the central part of the state. It is situated about halfway between Macon and Atlanta, and is part of the Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of approximately 1,500 people, and is known for its rural charm and small-town atmosphere.

History

Oglethorpe was founded in 1820 by the Georgia General Assembly, and was named after the British General James Oglethorpe, who founded the colony of Georgia in 1733. The city was originally intended to be a trading post, and was located on the Federal Road, which connected the port of Savannah to the interior of the state. The city was incorporated in 1837, and was the county seat of Macon County until 1871, when the county seat was moved to Montezuma.
